What Is A Calorie Deficit? & How To Get In One

I made this video to clear up any possible confusion about a calorie deficit. This should answer ALL your questions (or at least most of them).

A calorie deficit for weight loss is really the only way to lose weight. I’m sure you’ve heard me say that before. But in this video I explain exactly what that means how to do calorie deficit for weight loss. The thing that motivated me to make this video was that I kept getting questions about how to do the calorie deficit diet. And it’s not actually a diet. So I knew there was a lot people didn’t understand about the concept. I also get lots of questions like how to know if you’re in a calorie deficit, how to be in a calorie deficit, what do I do if I’m in a calorie deficit not losing weight, and how to be in a calorie deficit without counting calories. I touch on all of them in this video.

In one of my other videos I talk about how I calculate a calorie deficit for my clients and what calorie deficit calculator I use. Here it is in case you want to check that one out after this one:

I also want to give a huge shout out to my new video editor Jess! I’m excited to start producing higher quality videos and stop making you guys suffer through my bad editing skills haha.

  1. Thank you for this! I'm currently doing Weight Watchers and doing an activity I actually like, kettlebells. It's worked SO well for me. I've lost about 17 pounds the last two months. I never really understood what a calorie deficit was, I just knew I was in one…trying to educate myself more about nutrition/weight loss so I can fully understand what is going in my body and so I can keep it up.

  2. Thank you for this video. I have been trying different diets that seem to restrictive, and aren’t sustainable. I am realizing it now thankfully, and would rather mix exercise in and enjoy healthy but yummy things! haha.

  3. Can you speak to Total calories on the Apple Watch vs TDDE? I have a bmr of approx 1306 and a tdde of approx 1560. I think (because the numbers are kind of lining up) that the total move calories = tdde but not sure. I am trying to run a calorie deficit and recently started adding small workouts a few time a week to keep the progress going and build more muscle but the Apple Watch is a bit confusing.

  4. Thank you for breaking this down! I'm currently on a weight loss journey, and so far I'm down 37 lbs. I'm in several different groups on Facebook, and people go at it about low carb vs. calories. I follow a low-carb lifestyle to help reverse my insulin resistance, but even I know that you have to be in a deficit to lose weight! That's the only way that I've seen success. I think it's irresponsible to tell people to ignore calories. I'm not even a huge calories counter, I simply practice mindful eating and portion control.

  5. I just started being healthier and losing weight a couple months ago. It's been pretty easy because even before that I would only eat once a day. Now I have a protein shake, 2 protein bars, and two string cheeses everyday and some vegetables and fruits. That's it. I've been throwing away food because I don't want to over eat. The meals I usually have have over 1,000 calories. I'm trying to eat a proper meal a few days a week. I go out to eat two or three times a week

  6. I wanna ask something,so like u have to burn more calories than u eat right so do the calories u burn naturally(while doing nothing) count in the calories u have to burn?
