Quit fearmongering about muscle loss

Made this last week and forgot about it.

But this is something i’m not letting go easily

As a former, and to a large degree still current fitness industry outsider, I know how much this made up specter of “muscle loss” can make it harder for people to actually get lean.

The flexibility that regular people, with kids, jobs, and life stuff need to get lean requires the ability to create big deficits when it makes sense for their schedule, the idea that you have to stick with a 500 calorie a day deficit or risk “muscle loss” nerfs this power and forces them into a lifestyle of completely unnecessary consistency and precision.

Which more or less renders high levels of fitness the domain of DINKS and Peter Pans. Again, completely unnecessarily.

Regular people should not have to choose between abs and kids, and they shouldn’t have to be like me either, willing to experiment with doing the opposite of everything that the industry that’s supposed to be helping them reach their goals tells them to do in order to be successful.

So take it from me, a guy who does lots of multiday fasts and still ends up bigger every year, muscle loss isn’t something to worry about. People think it is because:

1. Competive bodybuilders, including many fitness influencers like @jeffnippard lose muscle. But that’s because they’re cutting to near death levels of leaness. Anywhere above 10%, its a non-issue.

2. People think they’re carrying more muscle than they are and get dissapointed on the cut. You didn’t lose it, you never built it. But you still can!

3. Fear sells apps, coaching, supplements, all sorts of things.

The reality is, the body is resillient and well designed, you can cut as fast as works for your life. I can probably help you make that EASIER but ill never tell you you NEED my help to avoid some kind of boogyman like muscle loss to sell my services.

All jeans and other pants are only $99 at @barbellapparel this month and you’ll get a free hat with my code “Atlas”.

  1. Maybe if you dont train and loose muscle it stays lost longer but if you train and start eating okay again muscles will recover probably pretty fast

  2. I train full body every workout usually 3 or 4 days in a row then rest one day, eat whatever I want just make sure I get enough meat and veggies. I'm getting better results than ever.

  3. I actually LOLed because I thought this was a joke at first and was waiting for the punchline, but then the video looped and I was like "….oh. He's serious."

  4. It depends on the baseline.. people with tons of muscle can diet better and faster all they can. People with higher bodyfat cant. Their skin will sag a lot when they diet as fast as possible. Everything depends. Not white and black approach

  5. I think this is personal I lost 10kg and got worse at pull-ups and looked noticeably smaller in certain areas a few weeks eating more shoulders look much bigger and performance is mostly back given ive been training 4 years I doubt these are new gains given the speed it's muscle memory suggesting I lost muscle by cutting too fast

  6. Its incredibly difficult to lose muscle if your body doesnt deem it unnecessary(you dont do resistance training). Muscle is the biggest predictor of longevity, chances of surviving cancer etc. Why do you think your body would throw it away instead of consuming fat, whose only purpose is to be used as a fuel source(and hormones blah blah)
