Should you have cheat meals or cheat days when trying to lose weight?
This is a pretty delicate topic but it’s very common for people to be disciplined all week and then blow it all off on the weekend. In one day, you can literally destroy something you were building all week – cuz it honestly doesn’t take very much to wreck your liver or your hormones.
There’s a reason why you see people stay stagnant and never hit their goals. And it’s often cuz they let the wheels come off during the weekends.
For most people, you can’t get 100%of the results by only doing 80% of the work. Sure, it’s important to celebrate milestones, but just because it’s Saturday doesn’t mean a boozy brunch with shitty food won’t affect the progress you made all week.
If you believe in cheat meals or cheat days, that’s totally fine, just get ready for a long road ahead. Sorry
It’s called a lifestyle change and identity shift for a reason

Refeed is way better than cheat meals.
Refeed has a limit. Say you are only having 2000 cals for each day, monday to saturday, then sunday, you are allowed 2500 cals. Additional 500 cals ONLY.
Cheat meals/days have no limit. Eat whatever, whenever. You wanna eat 10,000 calories in one sitting? Go ahead buddy! 😂 all of that weight loss progress from the past monday to saturday gone just because you decided to mukbang on 20 pieces of starbucks' sticky cinnamon buns for lunch 😅
My cheat "meals" aren't meals it's just some snacks like some sugary sweets I have em about in 2 week
No, you need consistency while trying to LOSE. However, now that I'm in maintenance, I'm having high calorie days twice per week and low calorie the other five. Hope it works. This is my first week in maintenance. I'll be tracking and monitoring.
I have a diet free day every Saturday. I don’t go crazy, but I do eat foods that I normally abstain from during the week such as pizza, chips, and cake. I’m in a strict calorie deficit the rest of the week, and having the free day keeps me on track with losing weight. Down 26 pounds so far this year with a goal of losing 50.
Mine is one a month or every 2 months, and that’s just some fried rice or a cookie, more of a cheat snack
Thanks for the discouraging advice because I like sushi 😢
I workout like a fucking beast of course I’m gonna have a lil cheat meal but I’m not gonna fucking over do it
What is the definition of a cheat though? If you eat something off plan but at maintenance or even deficit is that a cheat?
Why do people think cheat day would affect their progress? That's like saying being on a diet for a day would make them lose weight. no that's not how it works
Depending on your calorie deficit, a cheat meal on the weekend might actually be beneficial.
It helped me to reduce fat faster
depends on how big your deficit is during the week
I have a cheat meal once a week and it’s pizza on fridays. It’s always 3 slices of cheese stuffed crust pizza. I count the macros and put it in my diet. Im on a bulk right now tho so it’s different. If i were on a cut I wouldn’t eat pizza at all or have any cheat meals. I don’t know if this is a good approach but do what u will with this info as needed
I stay good as possible as week! Then one day a week have a cheat day! But I’m finding the cheat day isn’t a good choice! I lift weights about 6 days a week and eat healthy. But I feel like that cheat day definitely screws up my metabolism and my body.. I’m definitely going to cut that out and instead of a cheat day.. maybe just have a cheat snack! Because all day eating crap foods just isnt it for me !
In the long term it's common sense that 1 day is not gunna ruin 6 days of hard work lol it's common sense. That's like saying you work 7 days and got paid for one day 🤦
Thank you for saying identity shift that helped a lot actually
I believe cheat meals are important not just because they keep you sane and keep it balance, but it also disrupts the placebo effect on your body
Cheat day every Sunday but I don't go insane. Just standard meals with no gluttony
It’s been 6 weeks of cutting out refined sugars, being on a caloric deficit and eating whole foods only. I even went out to brunch with some friends and got a salad with salmon at this upscale restaurant that was know for their pastas and pizzas—but I didn’t cave in. I’ve been exercising 6-7 days a week and my clothes are now loose and my waist did slim down. However, this week I’ve been craving a double lamb cheeseburger and chicken tikka fries from this new place that just opened up but I don’t know if it would set me back and sabotage my progress. 😭 what to do what to do
The answer is nuanced. Its more about how much you're eating (binge style or reasonable break) If you approach it with some moderation like say one meal a month or two that is spaghetti and some rolls. Its not going to destroy your gain, but it needs to be nutritious ENOUGH that you are being satiated, without overloading so much junk that it does hurt you.
Just be smart about it
I had a my birthday this weekend is it fine if I had a cheat meal then?
No, I don't have cheat meals, I've been working out for 2 years and have never had a single cheat meal since I started, I've always been a firm believer it doesn't matter if you even eat a single peice of a donut, it WILL affect you, and you WILL gain wait, so please, follow your diet 100% of the time, if you can't do that then you shouldn't even be on a diet in the first place.
This guy has such a punchable face. He fires me up!
Cheat meals will come. Don’t schedule them they just happen to be
Eat a touch less 5-6 days a week and only go a bit above maintenance on your cheat days. Just don’t go ham and have 3k surplus calories.
Our life's routine should be based on a 7day split
Sunday comes after 7 days doesn't mean you should eat
Keep your routine of cheat meal atleast 10+days
Bro it's simple calculate your daily calories and average out your weekly cals to less than your maintenance it doesn't matter if one day you have 1600 and the other 2400 if you're caloric deficit says 2000
I only do cheat day's once in month i eat like crazy that day. Nothing changes i still stay in my shape
I eat cheat food. I dont do a cheat meal, but its a food, usually an entree without the sides and sugary drink, for example, a burger by itself or a pasta dish like Spaghetti and meatballs by itself, which is the total amount of calories a typical meal is (500-600kcal). I do this weekly. It's important to eat as a reward for accomplishing your goals and it must be food that is your favorite and that you love to eat.
Eat low sugar low fat low fat content food but still able to enjoy some nice once a while
So wht are we suppose to do,give up on everything?and live like shitt!atleast a day in a week needs to be mine
I just fast the day before and after. It's what you're willing to sacrifice
I do cheat meals when I have my period to regulate period cramps
I think once you've actually hit your weight goal and you're still continuing your regular regimen, having two cheat meals a week is something you can get away with and it also helps your mood. Whole entire cheat days though seems like a bad idea and cheating while you're still trying to lose weight could easily set you back in your goals.
As long as it is a cheat meal and not a cheat day, I would say have one every two weeks. Helps keep the body off balance.
Cheat meals are completely fine but cheat days is disasters
Yeah, so cheat meals are def better. I do yogurt and bananas in the morning, then the entire pizza and a slice of cake for my cheat day. Other than that, clean meals. Just count your calories and make sure your cheat meal doesn't go over the 6 days worth of deficit
I lost over 50lbs doing keto. After that I incorporated exercising 5 days a week. 3 days lifting, 2 days cardio and eat whatever I want during the weekends. The weight has stayed off. Works for me.
